Description
Description:
Transparent colorless liquid.
Composition:
1 ml of the drug contains
active ingredient:
Detomidine hydrochloride – 10 mg;
Excipients: sodium chloride, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, water for injection.
Pharmacological properties:
Detomidine hydrochloride is an a2-adrenoreceptor agonist. Equisetan causes suppression of the central nervous system and increases the pain threshold. The action of detomidine depends on the dose:
Small doses exhibit mild sedation without analgesia, while large doses cause significant sedation and analgesia. When administered intravenously, the drug acts faster, when administered intramuscularly, it acts slower.
The drug is quickly absorbed after intramuscular injection.
Maximum concentration in blood plasma is reached after 15-30 minutes. Detomidine is rapidly distributed in the body, its binding to plasma proteins is 85-90%, it is oxidized in the liver and partially metabolized in the kidneys.
Most of the drug metabolites are excreted with the urine. Half-life period is 1-2 hours.
Dosage:
Equisedan is administered intramuscularly or intravenously to horses. The degree of sedation can be regulated by adjusting the dose of the drug.
The drug is administered intravenously slowly (1 ml per minute) in the following doses:
Sedation required | Dose | Effect onset (min. *) | Duration of action (min. *)
μg / kg | ml / 100 kg | i / v | in / m
Light | 10-20 | 0.1-0.2 | 3 | 5 | 30-60 |
Average | 20-40 | 0.2-0.4 | 2 | 5 | 30-60 |
Deep | 40-80 | 0.4-0.8 | 1 | 5 | 30-120 |
* – Times are approximate and may vary for individual animals.
It is recommended to use 2 sterile needles: one for filling the syringe from the vial, the other directly for injection.
As soon as the required dose of the drug is drawn into the syringe, it should be disconnected from the needle that is in the vial.
Another injection needle is injected into the animal, and only then the syringe with the drug is attached to it.
Usage:
The drug is used to produce sedative effect and analgesia in horses during surgical operations and various clinical studies, when immobilizing animals for their capture and transportation, as well as to prevent aggressiveness and fearfulness of animals.
Side Effects:
Administration of Equisetan may cause arrhythmia, which is temporary in nature, coordination disorders, and increased sweating.
Sometimes there is a slight tremor of individual muscles or muscle groups.
Contraindications:
Equisetan is not recommended for use in conjunction with sympathomimetics.
The drug is not used for horses in the last third of foaling (pregnancy).
